Commonwealth Learning Center Supports the Brookline MA Area With Personalized Tutoring

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) is a different kind of tutoring center. We work separately with each client to provide them with customized attention, unlike other tutoring centers that teach learners in groups. We believe that every client comes at CLC with their own personal hurdles and educational goals. Our caring, patient environment supports all of our students irrespective of their stage of life (K-1 through adulthood.)

We work with learners of all abilities, regardless if they need a little additional homework help or are challenged with a learning disability. We work with clients who have ADHD, dyslexia, executive function difficulties, language-based learning disabilities, and non-verbal learning disabilities. Our tutors are highly experienced, with advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading.

Here are the top four services we specialize in:

Educational Evaluations

We believe that early intervention is crucial to help a child succeed in school and the rest of their life which is why CLC provides educational assessments that can help uncover a learning challenge or effective learning style. Our assessments can help change a student’s life by making it fun and easier for them to learn where previously they had a hard time.

All new students begin with a no-cost consultation with our CLC director where their academic performance and history is reviewed. Finding out about each student’s strengths and challenges allows us to create a personalized strategy just for them.

Shortly after the evaluation, the learner and their family will be provided with a testing report that pinpoints areas of difficulty and what programs and methods we recommend for their specific situation.

Reading Tutoring in Brookline

Learning how to read can be one of the toughest things for a young student to grasp. We work with students in the Brookline Massachusetts area become stronger readers thanks to our many accredited programs that have been proven to help master reading skills. All of them can address conditions that make reading hard for students such as dyslexia. Some of our reading programs include:

  • Orton-Gillingham

This program aids students who may pause when they are trying to read a sentence and find it difficult to match sounds with associated letters. This phonetically based program helps students recognize the basic building blocks of English before gently advancing them.

  • Wilson Reading System

This reading and writing program takes students who struggle with spelling through a 12-step process so over time they can read standalone words. The steps are a little more advanced than the concepts of Orton-Gillingham and helps students remember principles through repeating concepts. The program ensures students fully understand the current stage before moving on to the next one, which results in reading and writing success.

  • About The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program

Also called LiPS, this is a strong phonetic program for learners who can not process distinct sounds, or phonemes, within spoken words. It demonstrates to students how proper use of the lips, tongue, and mouth creates the basics of letters and words.

  • About The Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

People develop mental images as they read and write since this program uses a visual approach to enable them to remember concepts. Students in this program are given the ability to succeed across numerous courses of study on top of reading and writing.

We help students reach their potential in math employing various teaching methods in all mathematics levels from basic adding and subtracting to advanced pre-college math. Children learn math better when they see and “touch” numbers, which is the reason we use the TouchMath program to help them add, subtract, and multiply numerals.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?

Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. But your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Brookline Kids

So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.

If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.
