Commonwealth Learning Center Supports the West Roxbury MA Area With Personalized Tutoring

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) stands out from other tutoring centers. As opposed to other facilities that teach learners in group settings, our specialists support our clients individually to give them the tailored attention they deserve. At CLC we believe that each and every student is one-of-a-kind with their own need and learning goals. Our caring, supportive environment nurtures all of our students no matter their age (K-1 through adulthood.)

We’re the perfect solution for learners who need a little extra help overcoming hurdles to those with special needs. Students with various learning challenges such as non-verbal learning disabilities, language-based learning disabilities, executive function difficulties, dyslexia, and ADHD come to us for support. Our instructors hold advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading and are certified to help learners with learning challenges.

There are four areas we specialize in:

Your First Step at the CLC: Educational Evaluations/Assessments

We believe that early intervention is essential to help a child succeed in school as well as the rest of the life which is why CLC offers educational assessments that help reveal a learning challenge or effective learning style. Our assessments can aid in changing a student’s life by making it fun and easier for them to learn where previously they struggled.

All new clients are given a free consultation with the CLC director. It includes going over past scholastic history and performance. Once we discover a student’s strengths and weaknesses, we can provide an individualized teaching plan just for them.

Post-evaluation, we review a testing report with each student and their parent that identifies areas that need support and which of our programs we recommend.

Our Tutors Help West Roxbury Students With Reading

Learning how to read is often one of the toughest things for a young student to accomplish. We help create stronger readers in the West Roxbury, MA area using a variety of accredited programs demonstrated to improve reading skills. All of these can help manage dyslexia and other conditions that make reading challenging. These include the following:

  • The Orton-Gillingham Program

For students who have difficulty matching sounds with associated letters and hesitate when reading a sentence, this program is an excellent solution. This phonetically based program helps students understand the basic ingredients of English before gently advancing them.

  • About The Wilson Reading System

This reading and writing program guides students who struggle with spelling through a 12-step process so they can eventually read standalone words. The steps of this program are a little more involved than Orton-Gillingham and stress repetitiveness to help students remember what they’ve just earned. The program is successful because students review the current reading and writing concepts to make sure they can absorb them before the educator advances them to the following level.

  • The LiPS Program

Also called LiPS, this program helps students who are not able to process individual sounds in words by showing them how to speak words to then be able to write and read them. It teaches how the tongue, lips, and mouth form certain sounds which produce letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing®

This program was designed to create mental pictures in students’ minds as reinforcement as they hear and read words. This enhances their academic capacity across all types of study, not just reading and writing.

  • We Help West Roxbury Students with Math Tutoring

We tutor people of all ages and math levels to help them obtain their highest math grade, whether they’re learning elementary school math or high school calculus. We implement a variety of math programs to assist students at all levels in grasping math by seeing the formulas and solutions. We show students how writing down math formulas and solutions assists them in retaining what they’ve learned.

Our TouchMath program is a fantastic multisensory tool. It reinforces mathematical concepts by having children “touch” numbers to learn how to add, subtract, and multiply.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?

ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?

Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.

Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in West Roxbury Kids

So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.

If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.
