Customized Wellesley Massachusetts Tutoring Lessons with the Commonwealth Learning Center
Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) is a different kind of tutoring center. We work separately with each client to provide them with personalized attention, unlike other tutoring centers that teach learners in groups. At CLC we recognize that each and every student has their own challenges and learning goals that make their situation unique. Our caring, patient environment nurtures all of our students irrespective of their age (K-1 through adulthood.)
We work with students of all abilities, whether they need a little bonus homework help or are challenged with a learning disability. Students with many types of learning challenges such as ADHD, dyslexia, executive function difficulties, language-based learning disabilities, and non-verbal learning disabilities come to us for support. Our instructors hold advanced degrees in special education, reading, and math and are certified to work with learners with learning challenges.
Our 4 main areas of focus are the following:
We Give Educational Assessments
We believe in early intervention to help catch any learning difficulties and direct a student on the pathway to academic and life success. These evaluations can help transform a student’s life by allowing them to grasp concepts that at one time alluded to them.
All new clients receive a free consultation with the CLC director. It includes reviewing past scholastic history and performance. Once we discover a student’s strengths and weaknesses, we can provide a personalized education plan made specifically for them.
Each student and parent receives a testing report following the evaluation which highlights areas that need work and which of our methods will remedy them.
Our Tutors Help Wellesley Students With Reading
Learning how to read can be one of the toughest things for a young student to grasp. We help create stronger readers in the Wellesley, MA area using a variety of accredited programs shown to boost reading skills. All of them can address conditions that make reading hard for students such as dyslexia. Our reading programs include:
-
The Orton-Gillingham Program
This program aids students who may pause when they are attempting to read a sentence and find it difficult to match sounds with associated letters. This phonetically based program helps students recognize the basic building blocks of English before gently advancing them.
-
Wilson Reading System
This 12-step program is great for students who have a hard time with spelling and reading stand-alone words when they’re not being used in a sentence. The steps go beyond the phonics of the Orton-Gillingham program and students hold on to what they gain from constant repetitiveness. The program is successful because students review the current reading and writing concepts being taught to make sure they can retain them before the instructor advances them to the next level.
-
About The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program
Known as LiPS, this phonetically based program helps students learn how to speak words correctly before actually writing them. It teaches how the tongue, lips, and mouth form certain sounds which create letters and words.
-
Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program
This program was developed to create mental pictures in students’ minds as reinforcement when they read and hear words. Students in this program are able to succeed across numerous courses of study on top of reading and writing.

We tutor people of all ages and math levels to help them achieve their best math grades, whether they’re learning fundamental grade school math or high school mathematics. We offer a variety of math programs to help students at all levels comprehend math by seeing the formulas. We help students on a one-on-one basis prep for the SAT, PSAT, SSAT, MCAS exams, and more. We know how to prepare students for the difficult questions in these examinations because we studied them ourselves.
We help mature students obtain more job opportunities by helping them prepare for the GED exam.

ADD vs ADHD: Is There a Difference?
ADD and ADHD are two terms that many people easily confuse. Don’t they mean the same thing?
Yes and no. At one time, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were two slightly different diagnoses. ADD in children was defined by symptoms that didn’t include hyperactivity, but being more withdrawn, “spacey”, and having a hard time focusing and listening to instructions. ADHD in kids, on the other hand, was defined by having an abundance of energy, talking incessantly, and demonstrating “bouncing off the walls” behavior.
Today, however, ADD is considered an outdated term while ADHD is the medically recognized name for any behavior that indicates an inability to focus, whether the child is “hyper” or not. So, attention deficit disorder in children really falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However your children’s doctor may still use ADD or ADHD to describe your child’s specific condition. They may still prefer to give an ADD diagnosis or an ADHD diagnosis to avoid confusion.
Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Wellesley Kids
So, will your doctor conduct an ADD symptoms test or ADHD assessment for your child to determine if they have either? Believe it or not, there’s no single test to diagnose ADD or ADHD. Your child’s doctor will instead interview you, your child’s teachers, relatives, and other adults they come into regular contact with to determine if their symptoms are in line with ADD or ADHD. They’ll use standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when making the diagnosis. Your child will also have their vision and hearing checked and receive a full physical exam to rule out any other medical conditions that may be causing symptoms similar to that of ADD and ADHD.
If your child is diagnosed with either, it’s important to let their educators know so they can work with them and make recommendations to you to help improve their focus in the classroom.
