ADD vs. ADHD: Is There a Distinction?
ADD and ADHD, two terms often causing confusion, may not carry the same meaning. Historically, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) represented distinct diagnoses. ADD, characterized by withdrawal, spaciness, difficulty focusing, and challenges in following instructions, lacks hyperactivity. Conversely, ADHD in children featured excessive energy, incessant talking, and hyperactive behavior.
However, contemporary understanding considers ADD an outdated term, recognizing ADHD as encompassing behaviors indicating an inability to focus, with or without hyperactivity. Attention deficit disorder in children now falls under the umbrella of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Nonetheless, some doctors may use ADD or ADHD to describe specific conditions, aiming to prevent confusion.
Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Shrewsbury Children
Diagnosing ADD or ADHD in children lacks a single test. Instead, doctors conduct interviews with parents, teachers, relatives, and adults regularly involved in the child’s life to assess symptoms. The diagnosis follows guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Additionally, vision and hearing checks, along with a comprehensive physical examination, rule out other medical conditions with similar symptoms.
Upon receiving an ADD or ADHD diagnosis, informing educators is crucial for providing appropriate support and recommendations to enhance focus in the classroom.
