Commonwealth Learning Center Provides Customized Tutoring Services in Brockton, Massachusetts

Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) offers a variety of benefits that set it apart from other tutoring centers. We emphasize individualized, one-on-one instruction for each student, which differentiates us from group-based tutoring centers. At CLC, we recognize that every student has unique challenges and learning objectives, regardless of age, from kindergarten through adulthood.

No matter the specific challenges a student faces, whether they need help with their curriculum or have learning disabilities, our programs and teaching methods offer effective solutions. We support students with dyslexia, ADHD, language-based learning disabilities, non-verbal learning disabilities, and executive function difficulties. Our tutors are highly qualified, often holding advanced degrees in special education, mathematics, and reading.

Our main areas of focus include:

Educational Assessments

Our experts advocate for early intervention to help students overcome learning obstacles and set a course for academic and lifelong success. These assessments can be transformative, helping students grasp concepts that previously eluded them.

For all new clients, we offer a complimentary consultation with the CLC director, which includes a comprehensive review of past exams and academic history. Identifying a student’s strengths and weaknesses during this initial assessment allows us to create a personalized strategy tailored to their needs.

Following the evaluation, both the student and their parents receive a testing report that highlights areas needing improvement and outlines our recommended methods and programs for addressing them.

Our Brockton Reading Tutoring Program

Developing strong reading skills can be a significant challenge for many students. In Brockton, MA, we foster improved literacy through accredited programs proven to enhance reading abilities and address conditions that hinder reading, such as dyslexia. These programs include:

  • The Orton-Gillingham Program

Ideal for students who may struggle with reading sentences and matching sounds to associated letters, this phonetically based program lays the foundational principles of the English language before progressing further.

  • Wilson Reading System

A 12-step reading and writing program that benefits students struggling with spelling and reading words in isolation. Going beyond the basics of Orton-Gillingham, this program emphasizes repetition to solidify learning, with students reviewing and reinforcing previous lessons before advancing.

  • The LiPS Program

LiPS, a robust phonetic program, helps students master proper pronunciation before delving into writing. It teaches students how the use of the lips, tongue, and mouth generates the basic building blocks of letters and words.

  • Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program

Fostering mental imagery as students read and hear words, this program enhances academic performance across various subjects, including reading and writing.

ADD vs ADHD: Clarifying the Distinction

ADD and ADHD are two terms that are often confused. Are they interchangeable?

The answer is both yes and no. At one point, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were distinct diagnoses. ADD, particularly in children, was characterized by symptoms such as inattentiveness, spaciness, and difficulty focusing on instructions, without hyperactivity. Conversely, ADHD in children was defined by hyperactivity, excessive talking, and overly energetic behavior.

Today, ADD is considered an outdated term, with ADHD being the medically recognized classification that encompasses all behaviors indicating an inability to focus, whether or not hyperactivity is present. However, some healthcare providers may still use ADD or ADHD to describe specific conditions, opting for one term over the other to avoid confusion.

Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Brockton Kids

Diagnosing ADD or ADHD in a child is not a straightforward process involving a single test. Instead, it entails a comprehensive evaluation. Healthcare providers will interview parents, teachers, relatives, and other adults who regularly interact with the child to assess their symptoms in relation to ADD or ADHD. Diagnosis is based on standard guidelines from reputable organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Additionally, children will undergo vision and hearing tests and receive a thorough physical examination to rule out other medical conditions that may mimic ADD or ADHD symptoms.

Upon diagnosis, it is crucial to inform educators to facilitate effective support strategies and recommendations for improving the child’s focus in the classroom.
