Our teachers have special expertise in working with students with learning disabilities, including dyslexia, ADHD, language-based learning disabilities, non-verbal learning disabilities, and executive function difficulties. Our team also offers educational assessments.
The CLC offers programs for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, for college students, and for adults who wish to improve their basic skills. Tutoring services are available in reading, writing, math, exam preparation, academic support, and study skills. Our educators are highly skilled and trained in methods that have been proven to be particularly effective for students who struggle to learn through traditional curriculum materials.

Comprehensive Agawam Massachusetts Tutoring Services by the Commonwealth Learning Center
When it comes to tutoring, Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) sets itself apart through a range of distinctive advantages. Unlike many tutoring centers that employ group instruction, CLC is committed to providing individualized attention to each student. We firmly believe that every student is unique, with their specific challenges and learning objectives. Our nurturing and supportive environment caters to learners of all ages, from Kindergarten to adulthood.
We are dedicated to helping students across the learning spectrum, whether they need a little extra homework support or grapple with learning disabilities. Our educators are highly qualified, possessing advanced degrees in special education, math, and reading, and they are certified to work with students facing various learning challenges.
Here are the four primary areas in which we specialize:
Educational Assessments at CLC
We understand the importance of early intervention in a student’s academic journey. That’s why CLC offers comprehensive educational assessments designed to identify learning difficulties and effective learning styles. These assessments can be transformative, helping students grasp concepts that once seemed elusive.
For all new clients, we begin with a complimentary consultation with our CLC director. During this meeting, we review past academic performance and background information, enabling us to tailor a personalized teaching plan.
Following the evaluation, we provide students and their parents with a testing report that pinpoints areas of difficulty and recommends specific programs and methods to address them.
Agawam Reading Tutoring Program
Mastering literacy can be a significant challenge for young learners. In Agawam MA, we foster improved literacy skills through a selection of accredited programs proven to enhance reading abilities. Our reading programs are effective in addressing reading challenges such as dyslexia. They include:
-
Orton-Gillingham Program
Designed for students who struggle to match sounds with associated letters and often stumble while reading, this program provides a strong foundation in phonetics and gradually builds from there.
-
Wilson Reading System
A 12-step reading and writing program, ideal for students who face difficulties with spelling and reading words in isolation. This program emphasizes repetition to ensure a comprehensive understanding of each level before progressing to the next, leading to success in reading and writing.
-
Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing™ Program (LiPS)
LiPS is a phonetically based program that helps students articulate words effectively, enabling them to read and write. It teaches the proper use of the lips, tongue, and mouth to form letters and words.
-
Nancibell® Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program
This program fosters mental imagery while reading and writing, enabling students to remember concepts effectively. Its benefits extend beyond reading and writing to academic success in various subjects.
Math Tutoring in Agawam, Massachusetts
At CLC, we assist students of all ages and skill levels in achieving their maximum potential in mathematics. Our unique math programs teach students to “see” formulas and solutions clearly, facilitating problem-solving. We also guide students in creating a personalized math formula manual to reinforce their learning.
For younger learners, our TouchMath program incorporates multisensory methods to help them understand addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
Test Preparation Assistance in Agawam
Facing exams, whether for college admission or high school, can be stressful. In Agawam MA, CLC alleviates this stress by providing one-on-one test preparation assistance. We are well-versed in the types of questions presented in exams like the MCAS, SAT, PSAT, and SSAT. Our extensive experience ensures that students are thoroughly prepared to succeed.

Key Advantages of CLC Tutoring in Agawam
CLC goes the extra mile to provide convenience and quality. We offer ample parking at our centers and modern facilities equipped with the latest computers. Private workspaces are available to minimize distractions.

ADD vs. ADHD: Clarifying the Difference
ADD and ADHD are terms that are often confused. Do they mean the same thing?
The answer is both yes and no. Historically, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were distinct diagnoses. ADD was characterized by symptoms such as inattentiveness, spaciness, and difficulty focusing without hyperactivity. In contrast, ADHD was marked by hyperactivity, excessive talking, and restless behavior.
However, in modern medical terminology, ADD is considered outdated. ADHD is the recognized term for any behavior indicating an inability to focus, regardless of hyperactivity. Physicians may still use ADD or ADHD to describe a specific condition, aiming to avoid confusion.
Diagnosing ADD and ADHD in Agawam
Diagnosing ADD or ADHD involves a comprehensive assessment process. Unlike a single test, the evaluation relies on interviews with parents, teachers, relatives, and other adults regularly in contact with the child. It adheres to guidelines established by professional organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Additionally, vision and hearing assessments and a full physical examination are conducted to rule out other potential causes of symptoms similar to ADD and ADHD.
Upon diagnosis, it is essential to communicate with educators to ensure appropriate support and recommendations are provided to enhance the child’s focus in the classroom.
