The Commonwealth Learning Center (CLC) is a non-profit educational center established in 1988 by the Stratford Foundation. We provide one-to-one teaching, assisting students from Swampscott and beyond, using a customized plan to meet the needs of each student.

ADD vs ADHD: Clarifying the Distinction

ADD and ADHD are often terms that cause confusion. Are they interchangeable?

The answer is both yes and no. At one point, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were distinct diagnoses. ADD, specifically in children, was characterized by symptoms such as inattentiveness, spaciness, and difficulty focusing on instructions, without hyperactivity. Conversely, ADHD in children was defined by hyperactivity, excessive talking, and overly energetic behavior.

Today, ADD is considered an outdated term, with ADHD being the medically recognized classification encompassing all behaviors indicating an inability to focus, regardless of hyperactivity.
